How long do I need to take singing lessons to see results

By Laura Dumbleton

How long do I need to take singing lessons to see resultsThis is a question we get asked so often – “How many lessons will I need before I see the results I want in my voice?” Technically, the answer is “How long is a piece of string?” Yes, I know thats an open-ended question, so let me explain what I mean.

It depends on what your goals are for your voice, and how committed you are to getting the results you want. It also depends on what your voice is like now, and where you want to be. If you’ve never sung before, then I wouldn’t expect to be Mariah Carey after a few hours. Equally, if you’ve been singing gigs for 30 years with bad habits, they won’t disappear in one lesson either.

The goals you set and the results you experience will grow and evolve as you learn new skills, so really, it depends on you as an individual as much as the training you receive.

Lessons are not the end – they are just the beginning!

Singing technique has been refined over centuries – we are very fortunate to have to a wealth of information to use right now. The IVA technique we teach here at Your Voice Studio gives you the tools to help your voice immediately, but the changes don’t last unless you work at it!

In your lessons, we give you exercises tailored to your voice so you can progress and see results quickly, but you need to go away and practice to see lasting results.

The overall goal for any aspiring singer should be a healthy and balanced voice that will last you the rest of your life.

But remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Think about building a voice, it’s like building a house – you can’t paint the house before you’ve built the foundations, walls and roof can you? Your voice is the same – you can’t put the finishing touches on something to make it ‘perfect’ until you have everything else in place first.

For singers who are serious about developing their voice in a healthy and lasting manner, progress is an on-going thing. You can’t have one lesson and expect your voice to be finished.

Most people see results in their voice in the first lesson & hear a difference in their voice almost immediately. However, you need to practice regularly to make these positive results last.

Alright, I get it. So what do I need to do to see results?

To begin with, take lessons! The more often you can have lessons, the better. We would recommend every week if you can afford it, even half an hour will be great. This way you will be working towards the results you want, and we as teachers will continuously change and refine our teaching plan for your voice as it develops, challenging you and your voice to ensure you get those results. If you practice regularly after your lessons, this is when you’ll see results sticking, and your voice becoming stronger.

So really, regular lessons and practise are the best way to see results quickly. As for how long it takes to see results, it depends on a number of factors – what your goals are, where your voice is right now, and how dedicated you are to making the changes you may need to make to get to your goals.
