As teachers, we often get asked “Will singing lessons change my style or tone?”.  The short answer is no, not unless you are singing in a way that is, or could be harmful to your voice.

If you happen to be singing in a way that is harmful, or could be potentially harmful long-term to your voice, then we have to address the issues that are causing the damage or potential damage to your voice.

Singing lessons at Your Voice Studio are designed to enhance your style and tone in a way that will minimise any damage caused to the voice through misuse or bad habits.

Chances are, if you are experiencing any vocal discomfort or problems, that’s why you came for a lesson in the first place!

Some of the habits that we form as singers are not particularly healthy for our voices. We build them as coping mechanisms to help us through a difficult place in our voice or part of a song. The good intentions were there, but then sometimes we are not even aware that we have created this habit. You may also find that it’s not the healthiest, or even easiest, way of overcoming the problem.

That’s where we come in!

As Certified Instructors with the Institute for Vocal Advancement, we don’t presume to “put you in a box” – there is no “ideal” style or tone for a singer that we want everyone to achieve.

If we did, the world would be a really boring place because we’d all sound the same.

What we want to help you achieve is a healthy, balanced voice that you can work with for the rest of your life. This applies to every person who walks through the studio door, including ourselves. We don’t want to change your style or tone, we want to help you make it even better than it is now.

This may involve correcting bad habits that you have picked up along the way, and replacing with good habits instead. But, this won’t change your style or tone, unless the bad habits are harming your voice. In which case, we’ll work with you to help you achieve the sound you want in a better, healthier way with less stress and strain to your voice.

All of our students have their own unique style and tone, and every single one of them has kept or enhanced what they walked into our studio with. We won’t make you sound like a clone, we’ll help you achieve the sound in a way that is natural for you.

Even if you don’t feel like you have a style or tone yet, then we’ll help you discover what your vocal strengths and style are and work from there.

Everyone is unique, and we will help you find your niche as a singer. After all, it’s how some of us make a living, right? Why would you want to change it, unless it’s for the better?

So, if you want lessons that won’t change your natural style and tone, then get in touch to book yourself a lesson. We’d also love to hear your experiences of singing lessons and whether they changed your style and tone! Get in touch via our Facebook page, Google + and Twitter, or leave us a comment below.
